FAQs

If you can’t see what you’re looking for book an appointment

Is there a charge for your service?

No. The service is Free, Confidential, Independent and Impartial.

Will you support me in any family or civil court?

Subject to availability and booked in advance, Paul can support in the Manchester Civil Justice Centre, Stockport County and Family Court, Wigan County and Family Court and the Employment Tribunal at Parsonage House Manchester. In exceptional circumstances, I may be able to support in the Huddersfield Civil Court.

What times are you available?

09:30am to 4.00pm, Monday to Friday, excluding public and bank holidays.

Do I need an appointment?

Yes. Appointments must be booked in advance and are subject to availability. Appointments will be by telephone or video (MS Teams or Zoom).

How many times will I be able to come for help?

There is no limit on the number of appointments you may have.

Will I be able to bring a friend or relative to accompany me?

Yes, at the courts. Civil courts are open courts, and the usher would need to be informed that a friend or family member wishes to sit at the back and observe. Family courts are closed (private sittings) and although this is changing to permit, for example, journalists to observe proceedings (if permission is given by the judge and anonomity is maintained), family members and friends must wait outside in the corridor.

Can you look after my children while I’m in my hearing?

No. The court does not encourage bringing children to hearings so please make alternative arrangements for them for when you have a hearing.

Can you give me legal advice?

No. I offer practical and emotional support to people facing court without a lawyer. In some instances, I can signpost you to other agencies that may be able to help.

Are you able to help me find free legal advice?

Where possible I will provide you with information about where to find free legal advice in the local area.

Can I bring the evidence for my case to show you?

Yes. This would need to be emailed to me so that we can go through it together during the appointment.

Can you help me complete court forms?

I can help you navigate and complete the relevant sections of many court forms (See: List of Court Forms) but cannot advise you what’s best to write for your case.

Can you provide an interpreter or British signer?

No. For any appointments with me you would need to provide your own interpreter or British signer. If requested in advance, the courts will (subject to availability) provide these and hearing loops are usually available in courts.
